Hopetoun Estates LLP is the management company for the Hopetoun country estate in Broxburn, West Lothian. The Estate has a complex number of economic activities from fishing and golfing to farming and holiday accommodation. Estate Manager, Peter Gayford, was keen to discuss how 2kt could help identify further ways to develop the estate.
2kt partner, Oatridge College, worked closely with the Estate to investigate a range of development opportunities. A number of potential projects were identified but, as the Estate was moving increasingly into visitor tourism, the completion of an access survey was recognised as a priority. The Estate traditionally only had one right of way despite having a complex network of walking paths, bridal ways and cycle paths. In order to make the most effective use of these assets a formal plan, which was sympathetic to the Estate environment, was required.
A survey of all the pathways on the Estate was completed and research conducted to identify the outcomes achieved by similar projects. As a result, a report has been produced with recommendations on access signage, path renovation and construction, and potential sources of funding.
